Genetic Screening

Breast Cancer Risk Assessment

(BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes)

Patients with any of the following personal or family history features may be candidates for hereditary cancer testing.

  • Breast cancer before age 50
  • Ovarian cancer at any age
  • 2 or more breast cancers in a family, one underage 50
  • Both breast cancer and ovarian cancer diagnosed in the same individual at any age
  • Male breast cancer at any age
  • Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry with breast or ovarian cancer at any age
  • A previously identified BRCA mutation in the family

If any of the above criteria is present in the family, the risk of cancer increases.

Depending on the results of your screening, you may be recommended for the BSA Harrington Breast Center High Risk Program, where our interdisciplinary team of breast care specialists will provide you an individualized plan of care to include comprehensive risk assessment, discussion of risk reduction measures and strategies for earlier detection.
